If you're looking for a pub with a sense of history and a number of ghostly regulars, the Red Lion on Merchant gate is the place for you.
The foundations of this charming pub date back to the 12th Century, making it by far York's oldest pub with a wealth of history surrounding it. Amongst its most famous features is a priest hole used by Highwayman Dick Turpin, a friend of the landlord, to hide from the authorities. It didn't work though, and he is buried just a short walk from the pub..
A family run pub with a food ethos of fresh ingredients and simple, home cooking, its also famous for its ghostly residents - just ask the Landlord about his recent encounter with a sweet old lady known as Hilda!
Located just a few minutes walk from York Castle, the Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Centre and practically next to the Medieval Merchant Adventurers Hall, the Red Lion is a piece of living history just waiting to be discovered!
N.B. Free live music events are often on at the Red Lion, over the summer in the fabulous beer garden. To see who is coming up, have a look at the Red Lion's profile on yorknights.com
